NBA 2K23 is the latest installment in the popular basketball simulation series, developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. The game features a variety of modes, such as MyCareer, MyTeam, MyGM, MyLeague, and The City, that allow players to create their own custom characters, build their dream teams, manage their franchises, or explore a massive online hub. NBA 2K23 also boasts impressive graphics, realistic gameplay, and a rich presentation that captures the excitement and drama of the NBA. But does it live up to the hype? Or is it plagued by microtransactions and imbalance? Let’s find out.
Gameplay: Smooth Moves on the Court
NBA 2K23 is as close as the series has ever come to emulating a real game of basketball. The gameplay is smooth, responsive, and strategic, with various moves and options available for both offense and defense. Players can use the right analog stick to perform different dribble moves, shot types, layups, dunks, passes, steals, blocks, and more. The shooting system uses a meter that fills up when you start your shot and requires you to release it at the right time for optimal accuracy. The meter can be customized to suit your preference or turned off entirely for a more realistic feel.
The game also factors in various aspects of basketball physics and statistics, such as player ratings, hot zones, badges (special skills), fatigue (which affects stamina), momentum (which affects morale), spacing (which affects passing lanes), matchups (which affect difficulty), fouls (which affect free throws), injuries (which affect performance), timeouts (which affect strategy), substitutions (which affect chemistry), etc. All these elements make every game feel dynamic and unique.
The game modes offer different ways to enjoy the gameplay. MyCareer lets you create your own player and follow their journey from college to the NBA draft to stardom. You can customize your player’s appearance (including face scan), attributes (including height and weight), position (including secondary position), play style (including archetype), takeovers (special abilities that activate when you’re on fire), badges (that enhance your skills), animations (that affect your moves), accessories (that affect your look), etc. You can also choose your agent (who affects your endorsements), your team affiliation in The City(who affects your reputation), your social media presence(who affects your fanbase), and more.
NBA 2K23 vs NBA Live 22
NBA 2K23’s main competitor is NBA Live 22, the other basketball simulation game developed by EA Sports. NBA Live 22 features similar modes, such as The One (career mode), Ultimate Team (card mode), Franchise (GM mode), and The Streets (online mode).NBA Live 22 also features realistic graphics, presentation, and gameplay. However,NBA 2K23 has some advantages over NBA Live 22, such as:
- More modes, options, and customization
- Better gameplay mechanics, balance, and AI
- More authentic presentation, content, and atmosphere
- More player ratings, badges, takeovers, and animations
- More cards, challenges, rewards, and microtransactions

Game Reviews
While NBA 2K23 won't be breaking the mold when it comes to sports titles, the quality of life improvements and revised season rosters might be enough incentive for die-hard basketball fans to get this year's version of the game. While the lack of ambition has been somewhat detrimental to the reputation of this sort of yearly release, there's no denying that the core gameplay elements that make this game so entertaining are still quite present.
Still, are the changes compared to last year's NBA title enough to warrant a try? Or should you stick with NBA 2K22 for another year? Let's find out!
Same Old Basketball
For starters, variety has never been the most prominent quality in any sports video game. Fans of the series know very well what to expect from each yearly release, so much so, in fact, that it would be riskier for 2K to modify some of the core mechanics behind their basketball simulator.
That's the reason why so many of the features introduced in NBA 2K22 return in the aptly titled NBA 2K23. Other than an updated roster and slightly improved visuals, you'd be hard-pressed to spot the differences between this virtually identical title and its predecessor.
However, it's worth pointing out that 2K has been at the top of its game with the latest entries in its NBA series. In terms of sheer realism and gameplay options, NBA 2K23 remains the top example of what a sports game should aspire to be – even more so than EA's FIFA 23.
The game's powerful AI-controlled adversaries will test your skills in every game, and the gameplay feels satisfyingly robust. It is, however, a little disappointing to see that there have been no significant upgrades made when it comes to the career mode, but if you're simply looking for some multiplayer fun, then there really is no need to worry.
Yearly Improvements
As is the norm with each yearly release, NBA 2K23 has further refined its gameplay mechanics to appeal to some of the more die-hard fans out there – the kind of gamer that demands realism be the top priority in their sports sims.
The Pro Stick feature that was so positively welcomed in NBA 2K21 returns better than ever. With the introduction of combos and so-called "double throws," players will have a much greater degree of control over their basketball skills than ever before.
For dunking, the metered skill dunks from NBA 2K22 return, as well as the ability to take off from outside the three-point line and throw it down in mid-air. More complex animations also allow for stronger blocking and trapping techniques, which means the defensive side of things looks to have been given the same level of attention as the offensive.
Now, players will also have more control over things like how they score their dunks, using the trusty Pro Stick controls to command their players' hands into the desired position. It might sound a bit complicated at first, but, trust me, once you've gotten used to it, you'll probably wonder why it wasn't this way from the start.
NBA 2K23 is more of what fans expect from the series – and that's a great thing. The improved Pro Stick controls turn this title into the ultimate video game basketball experience for players of any skill level.
Pros
- Refined Pro Stick gameplay
- New features such as double throws and controllable dunks
- Crisp visuals that are almost lifelike
Cons
- Disappointing campaign mode
